Cooking apples - 1 kg (peeled, cored and sliced)
Water -3 tbsp
Margarine - 100 gms
Dry brown bread crumbs - 100 gms
Sugar - 50 gms


  • Cook apples with water over low heat. Add sugar to taste and leave to cool.
  • Melt margarine in a frying pan and add breadcrumbs and sugar. 
  • Cook, stirring all the time, till crumbs are browned. Stir off heat white crumbs cool.
  • When cool, place alternate layers of crumbs and apple in a serving dish. Top with crumbs.
  • Decorate with cream and red current jelly if wished.
