SPINACH DAL (PAPPU PAALAKURA)

Ingredients:
Tuvar dal - 1/2 cup
Moong dal - 1/4 cup
Spinach - 2 cups (chopped)
Onion - 1 (chopped)
Green chillies - 6 (chopped)
Tamarind juice - 2 tsp
Salt to taste
Turmeric - 1/2 tsp
Chilli powder - 2 tsp

For Talimpu:
Ghee/ Oil - 2 tsp
Dry red chilli - 1 (broken)
Garlic cloves - 4 (crushed)
Mustard, Fenugreek, cumin seeds - 1/2 tsp
Curry leaves -  few

Method:

  • Wash and soak dals for 20 minutes.
  • In a pressure cooker, put dals with water, spinach, green chillies, onion and turmeric. Add enough water and close the lid.
  • Cook till dal is tender and soft upto 3-4 whistles.
  • Once the lid opens; add tamarind juice, salt and chilli powder. 
  • cook another 5 minutes in low flame or the dal is in medium consistency.
  • Heat the oil/ghee in small pan; add all talimpu ingredients and allow them to splutter.
  • Pour this over dal.
  • Serve with rice or roti.
